Psalm 48

A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah
Tune: Truro (LM)

1 The LORD is great! Much to be praised
in our God's city, and where stands
2 most fair upon his holy hill
Mount Zion, joy of all the earth!

She is the place where God resides,
the city of the Mighty King.
3 God in her fortresses is known
to be a refuge safe and sure.

4 For lo the kings their forces joined,
advancing, marched, with confidence,
5 but, seeing her, they were amazed;
in terror they were put to flight.

6 There trembling seized its hold on them,
pangs like a woman giving birth.
7 For you with wind out of the east
The mighty Tarshish ships destroy.

8 As we have heard, so we have seen
within the Mighty LORD's abode,
within the city of our God:
God keeps her safe for evermore.

9 O God, your cov'nant love to us
we've thought on in your temple's courts.
10 O God, your praise, just like your name,
extends to earth's remotest bounds.

11 Your right hand's full of righteousness.
O let Mount Zion now rejoice;
let Judah's villages be glad,
for all your judgments are most just.

12 Encircle Zion, walk about;
her towers count, her ramparts note;
13 go through her fortresses with care,
and to your sons their story tell.

The one true God, he is our God,
14 and evermore he is the same;
he surely will us safely keep
and he will guide us on through death.

It may be that there is a thought link here between Psalm 48 & 49

Psalm 48:14. (last clause). The last clause is much misunderstood. It is not, "Our guide unto death," for the words are,[in Hebrew], "shall lead us over death." Surely it means, "It is he who leads over death to resurrection" -- over Jordan to Canaan. The (Heb.) is used in Leviticus 15:25, for "beyond," in regard to time, and is not this the sense here? "Beyond the time of death"? Till death is to us over? Till we have stood upon the grave of death? Yes; he it is who leads us on to this last victory; he swallows up death in victory, and leads us to trample on death. And so viewed, we easily discern the beautiful link of thought that joins this Psalm to that which follows. Such is the celebration of The Mighty One become the glory of Jerusalem.-- Andrew A.
