Psalm 36 [this is a favorite]

This teaches us in the first 4 verses how bad I and all mankind are. Then how good and graceous the LORD is.   And finally how needy we are of God's  protection from other dangerous men.

Good tune is Manoah CM

 1 Transgression to the wicked speaks;
deep in the heart it lies.
There surely is no fear of God
at all before his eyes,

2 because himself he flatters so
in his own blinded eyes,
that he in his iniquity
sees nothing to despise.

3 The words he utters with his mouth
are wickedness and lies;
he has refrained from doing good
and ceases to be wise.

4 His thoughts and plans upon  his bed
iniquity invent;
he sets himself in ways not good,
from evil won't relent.

 5 Your mercy, LORD, extends to heav'n;
 your faithfulness, the sky.
 6 Your justice is like mounts of God;
your judgments depths defy.

LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
 7 How precious, God  your grace!
Beneath the shadow of your wings
men's sons their trust shall place.
 8 They with the bounty of your house
shall be well satisfied;
from rivers full of your delights
you do their drink provide.

9 Because the fountain filled with life
is only found with you;
and in that purest light of yours
we clearly light shall view.

10 To them that know you, evermore
your lovingkindness show,
and still on men of upright heart
your righteousness bestow.

11 Let not the foot of pride crush me,
nor wicked hand detain.
12 There evil-doers fall; thrust down,
they cannot rise again.

"Re-read Psalms 36, taking oneself as the wicked man in verses 1-4, and oneself under Grace as speaking for the rest of the Psalm except that the foot of pride' and 'the ungodly' in 11, 12 and one's old self again, trying to come back. Aren't 5 and 6 absolute corkers? And what unabashed hedonism in 8!" - C S Lewis Letters 16 Dec 1955
