Psalm 5

Ps.5

1 O Jehovah, hear my words;
  To my thoughts attentive be.
2 Hear my cry, my King, my God,
  For I make my prayer to Thee.
3 With the morning light, O LORD,
  Thou shalt hear my voice and cry;
  In the morn my prayer arrange
  And keep constant watch will I.

4 Truly Thou art not a God
  That in sin doth take delight;
  Evil shall not dwell with Thee
5 Nor the proud stand in Thy sight.
  Evil doers Thou dost hate;
6 Liars Thou wilt bring to naught.
  GOD abhors the man who loves
  Deed of blood or lying thought.

7 But in Thine abundant grace
  To Thy house will I repair;
  Looking to Thy holy place,
  In Thy fear I'll worship there.
8 Since, O LORD, mine enemies,
  For my soul do lie in wait,
  Lead me in Thy righteousness;
  Make Thy way before me straight.

9 For they flatter with their tongue;
  In their mouth no truth is found;
  Like an open grave their throat;
  All their thoughts with sin abound.
10 Hold them guilty, O my God;
   Them for all their sins expel;
   Let them fall by their own craft,
   For against Thee they rebel.

11 But let all that trust Thy care
   Ever glad and joyful be;
   Let them joy who love Thy name,
   For they guarded are by Thee.
12 And a blessing rich, O LORD,
   To the righteous Thou wilt yield;
   Thou wilt compass him about
   With Thy favor as a shield.

Psalm 4

 Ps.4
Tune: Penitence  "In the Hour of Trial" 11.11.11.11.
 Adapted from The Psalter, 1912

1 Answer when I call, O God who justifies.
   In my stress you freed me; Hear in grace my cries.
2 Sons of men, how long will you my glory shame?
   Will you love what's worthless? Will lies be your aim?

3 On the good and faithful God has set His love;
   when they call He sends them blessings from above.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not. Bid your heart be still;
   thro’ the silent watches think upon His will.

5 Lay upon God’s altar good and loving deeds,
   and in all things trust Him to supply your needs.
6 Anxious and despairing, many walk in night;
   but to those that fear Him God will send His light.

7 In God’s love abiding, I have joy and peace
   more than all the wicked, tho’ their wealth increase.
8 In His care confiding, I will sweetly sleep,
   for, O Lord, You only will in safety keep.

Psalm 3

Ps.3

  Tune: New Britain "Amazing Grace" CM

1 O LORD, how are my foes increased!
       Against me many rise.
2 How many say, "In vain for help
       He on his God relies!"
3 You are my shield and glory, LORD;
       You lifted up my head.
4 I cried out,"LORD!" and from His hill
       To me His answer sped.
5 I lay down, slept, and woke again --
       The LORD is keeping me.
6 I will not fear ten thousand men
       Entrenched surrounding me.
7 Arise, O LORD! Save me, my God!
       You punish all my foes.
You smite the face of wicked men,
       Their teeth break with your blows.
8 Deliverance is from the LORD,
       Salvation His alone!
O let Your blessing evermore
       Be on Your people shown.

Psalm 2

Ps.2
Tune: Mendelssohn "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" 7.7.7.7. D
adapted from the Book of Psalms 1871

1 Why do heathen nations rage? Why do peoples folly mind?
2 Kings of earth in plots engage, Rulers are in league combined;
   Then against Jehovah high, And against Messiah's sway,
3 "Let us break their bands," they cry, "Let us cast their cords away."
4 But the Lord will scorn them all; He will laugh Who sits on high.

Then His wrath will on them fall; Sore displeased He will reply:
6 "Yet according to My will I have set My King to reign,
   And on Zion's holy hill My Anointed I'll maintain."
7 His decree I will make known: Unto Me the Lord did say,
   "You are My beloved Son; I've begotten You this day.

8 Ask of Me, and You I'll make Heir to earth and nations all;
9 Them with iron You shall break, Dashing them in pieces small."
10 Therefore, kings, be wise, give ear; Hearken, Judges of the earth;
11 Serve the Lord with godly fear; Mingle trembling with your mirth.
12 Kiss the Son, His wrath to turn, Lest you perish in the way,
     For His anger soon will burn. Blest are all that on Him stay.

Psalm 1

Ps.1
Tune: Irish CM

1. That man is blest who, fearing God,
From sin restrains his feet,
Who will not stand with wicked men,
Who shuns the scorners' seat.

2. Yea, blest is he who makes God's law
His portion and delight,
And meditates upon that law
With gladness day and night.

3. That man is nourished like a tree
Set by the river's side;
Its leaf is green, its fruit is sure,
And thus his works abide.

4. The wicked like the driven chaff
Are swept from off the land;
5. They shall not gather with the just,
Nor in the judgment stand.

6. The Lord will guard the righteous well,
Their way to Him is known;
The way of sinners, far from God,
Shall surely be o'er-thrown.
